Udokan Copper is the first Russian company to get an independent assessment of the deposit development project climate impact

The British Standards Institution (BSI) conducted an independent calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions forecasted for 2023 as a result of the Udokan Mining and Metallurgical Plant Stage 1 launch.

Yulia Shabala noted: “We will complete the development of the Climate Program by the end of November. And we will contribute to the fight against climate change not only by our own efforts, but also by our product — copper. This metal is critically important for electrification and renewable energy technologies, which means decarbonization of the global economy”.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) conducted an independent calculation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions forecasted for 2023 as a result of the Udokan Mining and Metallurgical Plant Stage 1 launch.

The certificate for compliance with ISO 14064-1:2018 was presented to Yulia Shabala, Deputy CEO for Sustainable Development and Corporate Affairs of Udokan Copper, by David Fardel, Country Manager of the BSI Office in Russia and the CIS.

BSI experts assessed the accuracy of emission calculations from all production units of the Udokan MMP Stage 1 with a production output of up to 15.0 million tonnes of ore starting from 2023, when it reaches its full capacity. The inventory scope includes emissions of the following categories: direct GHG emissions, indirect GHG emissions from imported energy and other indirect GHG emissions.

It is the first Russian project to be certified for compliance with the requirements of ISO 14064-1:2018. “We are pleased to witness the readiness of Russian companies to take into account the modern trends of sustainable development and their willingness to comply with international requirements and standards. This demonstrates the maturity of business and its environmentally responsible attitude. This project is a good example of that”, said David Fardel.
